Thirty-four is thirty and four — not three and four. The tens rod is worth ten of the little cubes.
The places are counted from the right: ones, then tens, then hundreds. That is the opposite way round to reading.
91 and 19 use the same digits. Always compare the left hand place first.
A digit and its value are different: the 7 in 274 is worth 70, because it sits in the tens.
Name the place you want, then look at the digit just after it. Five or more rounds up.
